Enter the magical world that is Freo Royale…
Venturing down to Fremantle is a rarity for me. For some reason, I feel like it is across the Nullarbor from Mt Lawley, and requires weeks of planning and a passport to get to. Every time I do happen to find myself down south in Fremantle, it feels like I have embarked on a mini vacation (yay!) and I fall in love with the area all over again.
In recent years, Fremantle has seen a boom in funky eateries, cosy bars and outdoor music events. Home to the infamous Little Creature’s Brewery, Bread in Common, West Coast Blues ‘N Roots Festival and hidden gems like Run Amuk, Many 6160 and Whisper Wine Bar, there are so many things to do and places to see. This year, Fremantle even got it’s very own Fringe Festival space ‘Freo Royale‘.
Last week, I was lucky enough to make it down to Freo Royale‘s launch party, where it became increasingly obvious that Freo – home of the arts – should have had their own Fringe space years ago! With it’s ‘base’ (and by ‘base’ I mean a Bar Pop, Gage Roads bar and festival gardens) in Kings Common Square, Freo Royale spreads it’s roots through out Fremantle, housing comedy, cabaret and ‘uncategorised’ shows across 10 different venues. After spending an afternoon in the festival gardens, Small Batch Lager in hand, listening to the sounds of comedy trio ‘Suns of Fred‘, it made me want to spend countless evenings down in Fremantle, bar hopping, stuffing myself silly with good food, and exploring all that Freo Royale had to offer.
Unfortunately, Freo Royale is only around for another 4 days, ending on February 15th… but there is still enough time to head down and check out some of the great acts performing across Fremantle! To see what is on over the next 4 days, see here!
