Choosing The Right Sunglasses For Your Face Shape

Work out which styles suit what face shapes with my sunglasses shopping guide.

There was once a time where I believed sunglasses just didn’t suit me.

I honestly felt that everything I tried on did my (oddly round AND square) face no justice at all. After much trial and error, and the joys of growing into your own body properly, I finally hit the jackpot and found some sunglasses** that suited me. It wasn’t that my face wasn’t made for frames, it was purely because I was insistent on only trying on certain styles – styles that weren’t necessarily flattering on my face shape.

** many, many pairs of sunglasses. So many pairs of sunglasses. I think I actually have a problem/addiction with/to accessories.

Just like shopping for the perfect pair of jeans, there is a bit of an art to picking the perfect pair of sunglasses. Of course, confidence plays a huge part in how you wear a pair of sunglasses, but knowing your face shape is just as essential in helping to determine what frames are going to suit you.

ROUND FACE

Characteristics: length and width of face roughly equivalent. Soft, feminine features.

Best styles: anything geometric i.e. rectangular frames or Wayfarer styles. The straight lines and rectangle shapes will help to elongate and contour your face. In saying that, oval shaped sunglasses will work too – just be careful they aren’t too cat eyed or butterfly style.

SQUARE FACE

Characteristics: Prominent features. A defined forehead and striking jawline.

Best styles: Look for curvier frames to accentuate your eyes and balance your jaw line. Round, oval, cat eye, butterfly and semi rimless sunglasses are all great options!

OVAL FACE

Characteristics: Slightly longer face than wide

Best Styles: Girls with oval faces have their pick of the bunch! Almost any style suits an oval face, although slightly more rectangular frames help to balance out the length a little if needed.

HEART FACE

Characteristics: A broader brow and a narrow chin

Best Styles: Elongate your look and draw attention downwards to balance out your face shape. Opt for lighter coloured frames and sunglasses with defined bottoms.
