I am a big fan of to-do lists. Scrap that. I am a big fan of lists in general. At any one time, I have at least 3 different lists on the go, detailing everything from my life admin tasks, to what I need to shoot in the coming week. The most recent list I have taken to compiling is one that I plan to go through and complete every single day. It is a list of 5 things I need to do for myself to maintain a healthy and happy body and mind. These 5 things are little things that I have added to my day and noticed great results from. They are 5 things that I believe everyone could benefit from incorporating into their every day lives.

Take 5 minutes out over your tea of coffee

Whether that means sitting on the couch for 5 minutes, or taking everything in around you as you wander on to the office, use those 5 minutes to be present. Rather than scrolling through emails, or sitting down in front of your computer right away, enjoy a little moment to yourself. Just a few minutes break from the humdrum of work life makes the world of difference to your day.

Drink at least 2L of water

It may feel like a chore to get that much water in – trust me, it wasn’t until I found a water bottle with a straw that I could do it – but your body will thank you for it. You may go to the bathroom a million times a day, but waking up feeling fresh, alert and in full health is so worth it. Not only does keeping hydrated keep the mental fog at bay, but it helps with muscle pain (dehydrated muscles hurt a lot after a work out!), lethargy and even your stomach.

Remind yourself what you want to achieve for the day

You may want to get a certain number of tasks done through out the day, or you may just want to get through the day without letting trivial things get to you. What ever your goals are, reminding yourself what it is you want out of your day before it starts solidifies what you need to do in order to achieve your goals. Once your focus is set, you will be constantly reminded of the outcomes you are striving for. Again, it doesn’t have to be a monstrous task, just something little that is going to make a difference to your day, or even someone else’s day.

Catch the sunrise

Not everyone is a morning person, I get it, but waking up to catch the sunrise enough may just make you one. Resetting your body clock so you can experience the quiet still of the morning is well worth it. It is refreshing and oddly motivating. Watching daylight break signifies a new beginning and sets you up mentally for a good day. You feel super accomplished rising early, especially when you can squeeze a whole lot in before the rest of the population is out of the house. Hot tip: keep yourself hydrated and you won’t feel groggy waking up!

Get amongst nature

We might not all have the time to have our morning coffee by the beach, but it doesn’t mean you can’t get some time in with nature. Break up your day in the office with lunch in the park, or spend some time tending to your garden when you get home from work. Heck, take the scenic route past the river on the way home from work. Even just 5 minutes with a view of greenery or water relaxes the mind. If you do have the chance to spend more than a few minutes somewhere, really take in everything around you and allow your mind to drift from stressors momentarily.
