Mark Twain said it all: “Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.”

It has been 11 years since I last stepped foot on the soil of this gorgeous little island nation Mauritius, and I can tell you that is definitely 11 years too long.
In my final year of high school we went on our first family trip back to the mother’s mother land. Since then I have desperately wanted to get myself back here. Meeting so many gorgeous Perth based Mauritians only fuelled that fire even more.
We’d been talking about doing a family trip back for a few years, but nothing ever really came to fruition. Now, in 2018, we are back and here to celebrate both mine, my mum’s and my brother’s birthdays in the sun and by the sea (and probably eating dhal puri and gâteaux piments). I have never spent my birthday anywhere other than home, so this is a bit special for me.
Not only do I FINALLY get a warm birthday, but we are back in the country that influenced so many of my childhood memories. We are just 3 days in to the trip and already I feel a sense of home and belonging. 11 years was definitely too long. I can guarantee it won’t be left so long next time!
Hopefully by the end of the 10 days I will have a lot more to share with you; but for now most of my journey is being documented mostly over on Instagram. Keep your eyes peeled for more on the blog in the coming weeks!
